We know that epilepsy may present unique questions and needs as you navigate a variety of employment and workplace options. Whether you’re seeking flexible work-from-home options, accommodations to ensure a safe and inclusive workplace, insights on disclosing your condition to your employers, or resources to educate others on seizure recognition and first aid, we are here for you.

Remote Employment Resources

If you have expertise in a particular subject, you could consider tutoring or teaching online. Many platforms offer the chance to teach students of all age groups, from kids to adults.

Examples: English as a Second Language (ESL) tutoring, Math tutoring, coding lessons, music lessons, etc.

English as a Second Language (ESL) tutoring:

Elementary, Middle, and High School tutoring (including writing, chemistry, biology, calculus and Spanish):

  • Skooli –  Requirements: Tutors need to have either a bachelor’s degree (or higher), a government-issued teaching license or specialized instructor qualifications. All Skooli tutors must also pass a criminal background check. A government-issued teaching license.
  • Yup Subject: Math only. Requirements: Applicants must submit a written application, pass a math proficiency test and take a teaching exam that’s set up like a mock tutoring session.
  • OutschoolSubject: almost any subject you desire (e.g. music, poetry, history, English, baking, cooking, etc.) Requirements: No need for formal teaching credentials. You have to pass a criminal background check.

These websites offer opportunities for working from home in various fields.

Writing and editing jobs provide the opportunity to work at your own pace from the comfort of your own home. These jobs can range from blogging, technical writing, copywriting, editing documents or manuscripts, etc.

Examples: Web content creation, blog posts, news articles, proofreading and editing academic papers or books.

  • Smartblogger – Lists editing and writing job opportunities like blogging, script writing, travel guides writing, and so on. There is a description for each opportunity and a direct link to apply for the job.
  • Salesfolk – Offers copy editing jobs, where you have to make emails more concise and compelling. Review every email campaign, and continue developing your skills through its training sessions. You will use proprietary software to edit if you qualify for the job. You may also perform line edits and make suggestions to writers.

    • UpworkOne of the biggest freelancing platforms where businesses and individuals connect to conduct business. You can find both writing and editing jobs across a variety of industries and niches.
    • FiverrOn Fiverr, freelancers can create personalized “gigs” to sell their services. This could include writing articles, blog posts, white papers, or offering editing services.
    • FreelancerThis site offers many projects including writing and editing jobs. The platform operates on a contest basis where freelancers compete to win a client’s project.

If you have fast typing skills or are bilingual, you can offer your services on platforms like Rev or Gengo.

E-commerce platforms are software applications that allow online businesses to manage their website, sales, and operations.

  • Shopify – A highly popular e-commerce platform that allows you to build your own online store without needing to code. It’s easy to use and has a wide range of themes and plugins to help you customize your store.
  • WixA website builder that also offers e-commerce capabilities. It’s good for small businesses and is known for its ease of use and beautiful designs.

As businesses increasingly understand the importance of a strong social media presence, they need designers who can create eye-catching graphics for their posts. You can offer this as a specific service. there are several websites where you can find opportunities in social media marketing.

  • LinkedInA professional networking site where many companies post job listings, including roles in social media marketing.
  • Indeed – A global job portal where you can find a variety of job listings, including freelance, part-time, and full-time roles in social media marketing.
  • Glassdoor – Known for company reviews, Glassdoor also has an extensive listing of job opportunities.

The websites below allow you to offer your graphic design services to clients globally. You can create a profile, build a portfolio, and bid on projects that suit your skills.

Many websites offer free online courses to help people build skills and improve their employability. Here are some platforms where you can find such courses:

  • Coursera Many courses on Coursera are free to audit (you can access the materials and learn for free, but you’d need to pay if you want a certificate). They offer a wide variety of courses in partnership with leading universities and companies.
  • edX Similar to Coursera, you can audit many courses for free on edX, which partners with many top universities and institutions.
  • Google Digital Garage Offers free courses on digital marketing, career development, data and tech, and more. They also provide certificates of completion.
  • CodecademyOffers free coding courses in many different programming languages.
  • Michigan Rehabilitation Services – A statewide network of vocational rehabilitation (VR) professionals developing creative, customized solutions that meet the needs of individuals and business.
